Teeth Brushing

How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy and Strong

Dental health should be at the forefront of your mind at all times. Just like you look after your body through the foods you eat and through exercise, there are important factors to consider when it comes to oral health and hygiene too. Today we’ll be going through everything you need to know to ensure you have happy and healthy teeth.

Brushing

First on the list is brushing. The NHS recommends that you need to brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice daily. We also recommend using toothpaste that contains fluoride as your water supply doesn’t usually have enough fluoride in it to give you the desired effects. Though many opt for a standard toothbrush, electric ones provide you with more power and an overall better clean. Once you’ve brushed once with an electric brush, you won’t want to switch back.

Flossing

Next up is flossing and you need to know that flossing is super important for cleaning all those harder to reach spots in your mouth. Food can often get trapped in between your teeth and if left, it can lead to tooth decay. Flossing also allows you to clean ever so slightly under the gumline to ensure that there are no areas that are left untreated. If you’re not a fan of traditional flossing, there are now electric versions available too that’ll leave you feeling like you’ve had a trip to the hygienist.

Rinsing

The final stage of your morning and evening oral hygiene routine is rinsing. Using mouthwash helps to get rid of any excess food particles that are in your mouth after brushing and flossing and also gives you nice fresh breath. Some mouthwashes also have stain removing properties added to them too to help to brighten your smile.

What to eat for strong healthy teeth?

Foods that are high in calcium are known to be great for healthier teeth and bones. Consider incorporating a healthy amount of milk into your diet to ensure this. Other sources of calcium can include beans and pulses, almonds, and leafy greens such as spinach and kale. It’s recommended that an adult needs around 1000mg of calcium per day and children around 1300mg. Those who are over 70 should increase their calcium intake too.

What not to eat to maintain healthy teeth?

Sugar is possibly one of the worst things for your teeth. This means that you should avoid foods that have added sugars in them. Sadly this means all the good stuff like chocolates, sweets and those tasty desserts. When the bacteria in your mouth react with sugar they release an acid that’s very damaging to your tooth enamel which could ultimately lead to tooth decay. Wherever you can, brush your teeth after eating something sweet. Also, citrus can be detrimental to your dental health. The acid can wear away at your tooth enamel; we don’t recommend cutting out citrusy foods altogether, but it’s better to eat them in moderation.

Smile

What minerals are essential for dental health?

Top of the list is calcium, which you can get from a variety of healthy food and drinks that we mentioned above. Additionally, Vitamin D has been proven to improve bone density and is therefore great for your teeth. Vitamin D is most commonly absorbed by the body through direct sunlight which is a great excuse to book a holiday to somewhere sunny. Foodwise, you can find Vitamin D in foods such as fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mushrooms. Minerals such as Potassium, Phosphorus, and Vitamins C and A are also great for your dental health.

What drinks aren’t good for your teeth?

Anything fizzy can damage your tooth enamel and ultimately lead to tooth decay. Not only this, but some drinks can also pretty badly stain your teeth. Some of the main culprits include red wine, coffee, tea and coca-cola. Anything dark will ultimately affect the brightness of your teeth. So we recommend only consuming those in moderation; we understand going cold turkey from them all might be a challenge.

How to keep teeth healthy when smoking?

Generally speaking, we’re medical professionals and don’t recommend smoking. Not only can smoking (and vaping) cause a lot of damage to your teeth and severely discolour them, it’s also terrible for your overall health too. However, if you are a smoker, it’s imperative that you never miss your dental checkups and always follow your oral hygiene routine day and night as you are more susceptible to gum disease as a smoker. You might want to invest in a harder bristled toothbrush and also get a toothpaste specifically designed for smokers like Clinomyn.

How often should you get a dentist checkup?

We recommend visiting your dentist at least once every 6 months for a full dental checkup, this way, your dentist can treat any minor issues before they turn into big ones. Also, they can carry out X-rays to ensure everything is healthy on the inside as well as the outside. Regular checkups can ensure that something simple such as needing a filling doesn’t turn into the need for a root canal.

How often should you see a dental hygienist?

This can sometimes depend on your individual needs which you can discuss with your dentist, but generally speaking, you should go see the hygienist every 6 months for a thorough clean to make sure everything’s in tip-top shape. The treatment is completely pain-free and many people find that after a hygienist clean they have a whiter and brighter smile too as many of the surface stains are removed.

In conclusion

We hope this article has covered everything you need to know about maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Dental health is extremely important and by looking after your teeth and getting dental checkups regularly you can ensure you have a healthier and whiter smile for years to come which has a whole host of benefits associated with it.

does teeth whitening hurt

Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?

The short answer is no! At Harley Teeth Whitening, the pain free process is performed by an experienced professional. Our qualified professionals use their skills and experience to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. Teeth whitening would only hurt if it were performed by an unqualified or inexperienced person at a less reputable clinic.

There are some very rare instances when clients who are prone to everyday tooth sensitivity can experience some mild sensitivity after a teeth whitening treatment. For this reason, if you have sensitive teeth then we recommended you visit your regular dentist for a dental health check up before proceeding.

All of the team at Harley Teeth Whitening have participated in a thorough training programme to ensure the highest proficiency in the cosmetic teeth whitening process. We pride ourselves on a safe, comfortable and effective pain-free service that leaves clients with whiter teeth and winning smiles. The professional clinic with a relaxed atmosphere in the heart of London is a big part of what makes our clients feel at ease. Customers are frequently singing our praises.

benefits of whiter teeth

3 Benefits of Whiter Teeth

If you have yellow or grey teeth then you may be concerned about your appearance. Of course the condition can be successfully treated at Harley Teeth Whitening Clinic, but if you’re still unsure about it then read through these 3 benefits of whiter teeth.

1. More Confident at Work

If you’re hiding your teeth and smile at work, you may be unconsciously giving off social cues that make people perceive you as weak and timid. Seeing your teeth shining white in the mirror will give you the confidence to shine in the office. This could result in major financial gains in the long run.

2. More Attractive

Studies show that people are regarded as more attractive if they smile more. A bright white smile could attract some attention from a special someone. Nobody likes faded and dull looking teeth. A white smile can make you look younger and is associated with a clean and healthy lifestyle.

3. More Talkative

Knowing that your teeth are beautifully white can encourage you to talk more, carry yourself with confidence and laugh heartily. Through these subtle changes you may find you are more engaged in conversations and that you connect more easily with other people. Not hiding behind your hands or shielding your smile will also change the way people perceive you. All these little differences can result in a major change to your life.

If you’re interested in having whiter teeth, then come and speak to a dentist at Harley Teeth Whitening Clinic in London. You can book a one-to-one free consultation with no obligation to proceed, and if you choose to go ahead with the procedure, then you’ll be skipping home with a whiter smile in just one hour. Experience the life changing benefits of whiter teeth for yourself!

Best Teeth Whitening Kits

If you are suffering from teeth discolouration then there is no better way to whiten your teeth than with a professional laser teeth whitening treatment. No over the counter teeth whitening kit can deliver the same results as quickly and effectively. However, if you are looking for the best teeth whitening kits for general dental maintenance or as a temporary solution until you get a proper laser treatment, then you should consider one of the following recommended kits.

1. Pearl Drops Pure White Whitening Treatment

This simple and easy to use kit retails at around £25. It includes a serum that you smear over your teeth after brushing and leave on for 30 seconds. Then you paint on the activator and leave for a further 30 seconds and finally brush off with the toothbrush and polish provided. They are available at Boots.

2. iWhite Instant

These are gum-shield shaped trays containing a rather weak whitening gel. Costing around £20 the course lasts for five days, with each treatment lasting 20 minutes. You look like a boxer while you have the thing on, but it is easy to apply and can remove stains. The treatment is too weak to make the teeth really white and the trays are shallow so preferable for those with smaller teeth.

3. Luster Premium White Pro Light

This novel approach to teeth whitening makes use of light. First the teeth are treated with a whitening solution and then you must shine the special lamp over your teeth for two minutes. It requires many repeated uses before results become noticeable.

best teeth whitening kits

4. Rapid White Dissolving Tooth Whitening Strips

Costing up to £50 a pack, these convenient strips are not cheap. You apply the strips to the teeth after dabbing on an accelerator lotion. The strips completely dissolve in a few minutes and leave a weird gummy stuff on your teeth which you must rinse off. This is a very simple and easy to use teeth whitening kit.

All of the above teeth whitening kits can deliver results with repeated use but none are as effective as a single professional teeth whitening treatment at Harley Clinic. Get in touch with us for a free consultation today.

is laser teeth whitening safe

Is Laser Teeth Whitening Safe?

It is not uncommon for those considering a teeth whitening procedure to have concerns about safety. This is understandable considering the sensitive nature of the oral/dental area and the associated concerns regarding safety which are perfectly natural and instinctive. At Harley Teeth Whitening Clinic we can guarantee that all treatments are carried out by fully qualified dentists to facilitate the highest proficiency in the teeth whitening process. These dentists are not only qualified but also equipped with substantial experience enabling them to perform safe treatments to the highest possible standard.

To answer the question”is laser teeth whitening safe?” one must first consider the context. Of course a procedure such as this could not be regarded as safe were it to be carried out by someone unqualified or ill-experienced. The actual laser teeth whitening procedure is perfectly safe and unlikely to result in serious side effects or complications. Choosing a reputable clinic like ours ensures that the procedure will be totally safe.

We advise pregnant women to avoid laser teeth whitening even though the risk of any problems is minute. If you had your teeth whitened and did not realise you were pregnant at the time, then you need not be concerned. It is very unlikely that the chemicals used on your teeth could have any effect on your unborn child.

Those rare individuals who do experience problems after laser teeth whitening find that they are minor and temporary. Some people report that their teeth feel more sensitive after the procedure but this doesn’t last long and can be alleviated by avoiding very hot or very cold drinks for a few days. Others have reported gum irritation but this too only lasts a couple of days in most cases.

If you are the sort of person who finds dentists intimidating and have misgivings about professional laser teeth whitening then perhaps it would be best if you met us for a free consultation. A trained dentist can discuss the procedure with you, free of charge and with no obligation to proceed. If you decide that you want to go ahead with laser teeth whitening then you can do so on the same day. You can book a free consultation and learn more about safe laser teeth whitening through this website. Having discussed the procedure in detail your mind will be put at ease and any questions you might have will be answered by our friendly and professional staff.

is teeth whitening safe in pregnancy

Is Teeth Whitening safe in Pregnancy?

Just because you’re expecting, doesn’t mean you don’t want to look your best. Even so, you should be aware of the facts before you attempt to have your teeth whitened. The British Dental Association says that it is safe to have your teeth whitened if it is done by a trained dental professional even if you are pregnant.

“There is no evidence that the whitening solution is harmful to pregnant or nursing mothers but the general advice during pregnancy is to avoid any unnecessary potential hazards.” Carmel McHenry, from the BDA, said.

In fact since 2012 it is illegal for anyone to perform a teeth whitening procedure except a registered dentist, dental hygienist or dental therapist on the prescription of a dentist. There are also laws in the UK preventing teeth whitening treatments from being carried out on women who are pregnant of breast feeding.

It is good to ask is teeth whitening safe in pregnancy although the risk is very small, because it is better to wait until afterwards for safety’s sake. If you have an urgent need to whiten your teeth during pregnancy then it is better to rely on whitening toothpastes. Toothpastes are safe to use because they’re mainly stain-reducing rather than truly whitening and do not rely on bleaching agents.

There is no evidence that teeth whitening while pregnant can harm your baby but safety legislation is put in place anyway because it is better to be safe than sorry. If you had your teeth whitened and did not realise you were pregnant at the time, then you need not be concerned. It is very unlikely that the chemicals used on your teeth could have any effect on your unborn child. Get in touch with us for a free consultation if you would like to learn more.

natural teeth whitening remedies

Natural Teeth Whitening Remedies

There are many ways to prevent teeth discolouration; including cutting black coffee and red wine from your diet. Over time it is still inevitable that your teeth will become less white which is why many rely on the Harley Teeth Whitening clinic for a professional and reliable service, leaving their teeth pearly white.

There are, however, those who would prefer to look for a folk remedy or natural teeth whitening remedies as an alternative. We would strongly advise you to be wary of such alternatives treatments as they may have no effect at all or could even make things worse. There is really no substitute for high quality professional teeth whitening, but we have listed some natural teeth whitening remedies for your information here. Please be aware that we do not encourage these remedies and do not guarantee that they will work.

Turmeric

This is a yellow spice that you find in curries. It is notorious for staining everything it touches with a strong yellow colour but ironically it is also used by some to whiten teeth. You have to make a mixture of tooth paste, turmeric and baking soda as described in the video below. Brush your teeth for two minutes then afterwards brush them again with normal tooth paste to remove the residue of turmeric.

It sounds like an elaborate joke but apparently some people really do this.

Coconut Oil

“Oil pulling” is a trendy technique that is supposed to clean your mouth out and remove bacteria. It is alleged that it can also whiten the teeth. Simply put a spoon full of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around and through your teeth for at least ten minutes then spit it out. Afterwards you should rinse your mouth out and brush your teeth as usual.

Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

This strange combination might raise eyebrows. Not because of the baking soda, which is mildly abrasive and can gently scrub off surface stains making teeth whiter, but more because of the lemon. Lemon juice is acidic and can therefore damage tooth enamel. Perhaps the alkaline baking soda acts to neutralise the acid in this folk remedy? Or maybe the lemon juice is supposed to work as a bleach for the teeth. It might be safer to substitute the lemon juice for water or just skip the folk remedies altogether.

If these natural teeth whitening remedies seem too strange then you would be wise to visit us for a free consultation about our professional teeth whitening services instead.

how much does teeth whitening cost

How Much does Teeth Whitening Cost in London?

If you are interested in improving the appearance of your teeth but must first ask “how much does teeth whitening cost in London?” then you have come to the right place.

First off it is important to understand that as with all things, you get what you pay for. The cost of treatments are based upon a number of factors which include the service provided, who the treatment is being carried out by, the equipment used and the aftercare service. These factors not only impact the price but also the quality of service. When it comes to something as personal and crucial as your dental health, it is unwise to cut corners.

Harley Teeth Whitening prides itself on the highest quality and safest standards possible. You can find out our prices on the cost page. The service is around £199 and is preceded by a free consultation with no obligation to continue. Treatments are usually carried out on the same day as your free consultation for your convenience, but that is up to you.

We use state of the art, modern teeth whitening equipment at our dental clinic so we can guarantee both safety and great, long lasting results. All treatments are carried out at our specially designed and immaculately presented facility based in the heart of central London. You can check out the clinic itself at a free consultation today, just get in touch with the button at the top of this page.

Free Consultation

Laser teeth whitening in London costs £199 at our clinic but you also get a free consultation at Harley Teeth Whitening. If you wish to proceed then you will benefit from pain free, instant results or if you just want the consultation then you pay nothing. The treatments themselves take only about 60 minutes and can immediately follow the consultation so your teeth could be looking shiny and white within an hour.

Avoid The Cheap Option

Laser teeth whitening is obviously more costly than simply buying whitening tooth paste. But these whitening tooth pastes contain abrasive particles which can wear tooth enamel down. The abrasive bits remove layers of stain particles from the teeth making them whiter, but may also damage your teeth in the process. Some kinds of whitening tooth pastes are far less abrasive but are therefore less likely to actually whiten your teeth. Although cheaper than other options, it is clear that you will not easily achieve noticeable results with these kinds of toothpaste.

Laser teeth whitening costs more but provides instant results and does not damage your teeth.

What does teeth whitening feel like?

In rare cases, clients who are prone to everyday tooth sensitivity may experience some very mild and temporary sensitivity after a teeth whitening treatment. However, if you already have sensitive teeth we recommended you visit your regular dentist for a dental health check up before proceeding as it is possible there may be an underlying dental health issue.

Here’s a selection of our previous clients discussing their treatments.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a safe cosmetic procedure that boosts the whiteness of your teeth to give an attractive pearly white smile. The process is very simple and follows three steps, outlined below.

First of all, your teeth are thoroughly cleaned with an activator to prepare teeth for treatment. This removes particles and plaque. Teeth are then coated with a bleaching agent.

Secondly, after applying a mouth guard, a high energy blue halogen light is distributed over the teeth. This is activates the Hydrogen Peroxide molecules without damaging any part of your teeth.

Finally, the exposure to the halogen light will generally last between 6-15 minutes. This means that most consultations can be completed as quickly as 30 minutes to one hour.

Why does teeth whitening not work?

Teeth whitening should work when completed by a trained professional. However, to maintain your new smile you have to look after it. Your new smile should be preserved for 18 months to 2 years following your treatment in our clinic. However, we strongly recommend a continuous treatment programme every 6 months to maintain your dazzling white smile.

Our teeth whitening aftercare page describes in detail how to best look after your teeth after your teeth whitening treatment. Basically, these are the basic principles of good dental hygiene and a bit of common sense!

  • Maintain a good routine of brushing twice daily, plus flossing
  • Try to cut down on smoking – or better yet, quit altogether
  • Avoid or reduce your intake of drinks that stain your teeth, such as red wine, tea and coffee.
  • Use regular toothpaste, and not “whitening” branded toothpaste which may contribute towards enamel erosion

How white will my teeth be after teeth whitening?

Our teeth whitening treatment will improve teeth whiteness by several shades. We will help you achieve a natural-looking pearly white smile. Generally, your teeth should retain their whiteness for approximately 18-24 months following your treatment. We recommend a continuous treatment programme every 6 months to maintain your new smile.

Here is just a small selection of our many happy clients enjoying their new smiles:

‘I would just like to say how pleased I am with my whitening treatment. All my friends have commented on how bright my teeth look but, at the same time they still look very natural. Three of my friends have already made an appointment with you.’ Clair Moffat

‘When I first visited Harley Teeth Whitening, I was so shy and self conscious but, your professionalism and friendly manner put me at ease immediately. I felt confident in your abilities that I could have the beautiful, white, sparkling smile that I have always dreamed of. I would like to express my sincere, genuine thanks to you for transforming smile.’ Alison Rose

‘What a result. I have smoked for years and you really could tell by the colour of my teeth. The treatment has not just made my teeth white but, has totally transformed my smile.’ Jay Patel

‘Many thanks to Harley Teeth Whitening, I have a perfect white smile and I feel like a movie star! Your clinic was very welcoming and staff very friendly, I felt right at home. All my friends have commented on my teeth and now they all want to have teeth whitening too!’ Dion Johnston

Why does teeth whitening hurt your teeth?

Actually, teeth whitening should not hurt your teeth at all when done by an experienced professional. Our trained professionals at Harley Teeth Whitening do everything they can to make a treatment as comfortable as possible. In very rare cases, clients who are prone to everyday tooth sensitivity may experience some mild sensitivity after a teeth whitening treatment. However, if your teeth are already sensitive it is strongly recommended you visit your regular dentist for a dental health check up before proceeding.

Our teeth whitening process is pain-free and we do our utmost to provide a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your treatment and look forward to its dazzling results. We are very proud to offer our pain-free teeth whitening treatment.
